Ana María Choquehuanca, Minister of Production, stated that in order to preserve the anchovy and guarantee sustainable fishing, The current minimum size will not be modified, which is 12 centimeters. Thus, he specified that his portfolio will comply with the recommendations of the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE).
This after a request from the National Association of Fishing Shipowners (ANAP) of Law 26920 and the National Fisheries Society (SNP) to begin analyzing a possible “update” of the minimum sizes for fishing.
“At the request of the fishing agents for indirect human consumption to modify the minimum size allowed for anchovy fishing, Imarpe recommends that there be no modification. And that is the position of the Ministry of Production“said Choquehuanca.
In the meetings with the SNP unions and Law 26920 shipowners, it was emphasized that the request to reduce sizes required a detailed study by Imarpe to determine if smaller anchovies can reproduce taking into account the new environmental conditions. Currently, there is no support to modify the sizes
In addition, the maximum catch quota for the second anchovy fishing season in the north-central zone will not be modified either. In that sense, the figure of 1 million 682 thousand tons established in Ministerial Resolution No. 358-2023-PRODUCE will be maintained.
“The quotas will not be reviewed, since the resolutions issued are supported by the IMARPE. We cannot grant an amount greater than that establishedsince the quotas are determined based on technical and scientific reports,” warned the portfolio minister.
Likewise, he explained that the IMARPE report presents four scenarios: unfavorable, neutral, unfavorable, neutral and favorable. From these four, one of them is chosen and based on that, one of the tables containing different risk levels and exploitation rates is selected.
“Considering the current El Niño Phenomenon, we have opted for the unfavorable scenario, identified by IMARPE as ‘strong Niño type’. However, an exploitation rate of 0.31 will be applied, which is equivalent to a quota of 1,682,000 , which is the corresponding allocation,” Choquehuanca pointed out.
