Peru has wasted energy potential, stated the COES

He Peru has the potential to generate 26,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energyHowever, various obstacles prevent this projection from being realized. In this regard, by 2034, it is estimated that the country will require another 2,800 MW of energy; however, current projects do not cover this demand.

This information was published this Friday, October 27 at the event Peru Energy South 2023 by Freddy Portal, who is director of transmission planning of the Economic Operation Committee of the National Interconnected System (COES).

In his presentation, he pointed out that there is a high potential for wind and solar generation, which together would represent up to 22,000 MW. In the South Zonethe possibility of producing up to 9,900 MW would be concentrated only in solar energy.

However, the truth is that, for now, in committed projects, by 2027 the production of an extra 1,167 MW would be reached (current demand is around 7,885 MW). After said year, there are no initiatives that cover the projected demand for 2034. Without new investments in renewable energy, Portal indicated that diesel would have to be used as a power generator, which would increase costs.

However, Portal believes that the scenario of depending on the diesel and that, over the years, new Projects of renewable energy that can cover the demand of 2,800 MW that will be required by 2034.

Expected decrease in electrical energy by 16%

In his presentation, Portal stated that, for 2024, a scenario similar to 2023 is expected. with a 16% less energy manufactured in hydroelectricdue to the decrease in water after the few rains. Therefore, this year the use of diesel as a generator, although it had no effect on electricity rates home. It is expected that there will be no notable increases in receipts in 2024 either.

Petrochemistry, but in Marcona

The legal manager of Contugas, Richard Castillo. The company distributes natural gas from Camisea in Ica. The Colombian firm promotes a project petrochemical in Marconawhich would take advantage of its pipeline.

Castillo pointed out that Marcona is now older competitive advantages than other initiatives -as Grinding— by the location of ports and the availability of the gas. He added that the project could be ready in three years. Regarding a petrochemical project on the coast of Arequipa, he said that it could be done, but that it would take many more years.

On the other hand, he recalled that Contugas also promotes a coastal gas pipeline, that would take the resource of Ica to the coasts of Arequipa and the Southern Energy Node. Likewise, he said that this would lower the price of energy for local industries. For now the project is being discussed with private investors.
