Textile industry in Peru
The textile industry is the third activity with the highest contribution to the manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Peru, representing 8% of total exports at the national level. In terms of exports by region, Lima – Callao leads with a figure of US$1,436 million, followed by Ica with US$218 million, Arequipa with US$199 million and Loreto with US$6 million. In addition, other regions stand out such as La Libertad (US$2 million), Piura (US$2 million), Cusco (US$2 million) and Tacna (US$3 million).
“It is a significant industry, which generates 400,000 jobs directly and 900,000 jobs indirectly. That is a fundamental element,” added Mathews.
In total, 716 textile products are exported from Peru, with cotton T-Shirts being the most notable, with a reach of US$461 million in 56 markets and the participation of 668 companies. They are followed by cotton shirts with sales of $195 million in 45 markets and the collaboration of 176 companies. There are also sweaters with sales of US$116 million in 50 markets, along with T-Shirts and undershirts that reach US$92 million in 39 markets.
In addition, the jewelry generates revenues of US$82 million in 36 markets and with the participation of 141 companies. Other categories include baby clothing and accessories with sales of $34 million in 42 markets, toys with $15 million in 25 markets, footwear with $7 million in 15 markets, and ceramic figurines and ornaments with sales of $4 million in 22. markets.
