The head of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE), Daniel Maurateindicated this morning that it is necessary to take a medium and long-term look at the situation of Peru’s Social Health Insurance (EsSalud).
According to the official, the entity’s actuarial report will be released in the coming days. “I have already received an advance and It is likely that in two years we will have a deficit in EsSalud“, he revealed in Congress, during his presentation at the Special Commission for Monitoring the Incorporation of Peru into the OECD.
According to Minister Maurate, the probable negative numbers of the institution are due to the fact that its income has not increased and has even decreased, on some occasions, due to legislative reforms. However, expenses continue to increase because EsSalud’s requirements increase due to the greater number of hospitals, more services and more insured people.
“This is going to be a crucial point that we also have to focus on in the national dialogue and in all instances,” he stressed.
For her part, Congresswoman Maricarmen Alva, member of the OECD Special Commission, indicated that the current situation of EsSalud is not caused by the decrease in income, but by the poor economic management of the institution. “It does have income, the problem has been bureaucracy and poor internal financial management of the EsSalud administrations themselves,” she remarked.
