The Minister of Labor and Employment Promotion, Daniel Mauratein line with the sixth recommendation of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in order for Peru to be admitted to this organization, mentioned the prospect of an eventual increase in the minimum salary.
The organization to which developed countries belong previously indicated that Peru must continue its efforts to establish technical and objective criteria that serve as a reference to increase the minimum vital remuneration, for which he recommended the implementation of a commission for this purpose.
However, in Peru the creation of said group is not necessary due to the existence of the National Labor Council, which fulfills the same functions. Thus, the head of the MTPE emphasized that “the increase in the minimum vital remuneration (…) has to come from an agreement between workers and employers.”
“We are trying to ensure that the criteria are not arbitrary, but that the criteria are technical. So, for that, a technical procedure is being established on how the increases in minimum vital remuneration should be established,” he commented in Congress, during his presentation in the Special Commission for Monitoring the Incorporation of Peru into the OECD.
Furthermore, he stressed that the criteria must be approved by consensus between companies and workers. He stated that the relationship between both actors should not be counterpart, but complementary.
Thus, Minister Maurate emphasized that employees “have to understand that it is not possible to increase labor benefits if the productive unit does not develop, does not sell more, does not grow or decreases its production.” While entrepreneurs must be clear that they cannot develop their company without human capital and without the support of workers. “Consequently, they owe a lot of loyalty, dignified treatment and recognition of all their rights to workers so that they have a good work environment that will impact the productivity of the company,” he concluded.
