Entrepreneurship: 40% of Peruvians plan to start a business, according to IEP

Every day, a significant number of Peruvians make the decision to materialize their business dreams or are planning a venture.

According to a recent survey carried out by the Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP), 40% of those surveyed, which is equivalent to 4 out of 10 people intend to start a business in the coming months, while 10% already have one.

The majority of people who plan to start a business are in rural areas (46%) and belong to the D/E socioeconomic levels (43%).

In accordance with Saul Elguera, member of the Opinion Studies Area of the IEP, the greater predisposition in these segments is due to the fact that this group of future entrepreneurs does not necessarily seek to increase their income, but rather to complement it to cover their monthly needs. “We talk about business small scale such as shops or warehouses,” he comments.

If the segmentation by macro zones is taken into account, the east is where the largest number of people plan to start a business with 48%.

According to Elguera, This result is due to the fact that this area is the furthest from economic development centers and has fewer job opportunities. Likewise, the desire to start a business is more present in the male population, in which the response reached 42%, while in women it reached 38%.

In the opinion of the IEP spokesperson, this reflects persistent challenges regarding gender equality in entrepreneurship. The response is also majority among people with higher education (41%) and among young people between 18 and 24 years old (43%).

Ease of undertaking

On the other hand, almost half of those surveyed (49%) believe that in Peru it is easy to start a business.

In this result also the majority of people belong to the rural area (55%) and the socioeconomic levels C and D/E stand out with 50% and 52%, respectively.

According to Sául Elguera, this is because planned businesses tend to be small scale and they are located in the informal sector, which implies lower capital requirements and bureaucratic procedures.

Optimism is also higher in men with 52%, while in women it reaches 46%.
