CCL: cell phone imports fell -12% until August of this year

Between January and August, our country imported more than 2.6 million mobile phones worth US$467.7 million, evidencing a 12% decline in imported units compared to the same period in 2022, according to statistics from the Research Institute. and Foreign Trade Development of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam).

On average, 7 million cell phones enter the Peruvian market per year, which come mainly from China and of Vietnamwith the low-end ones being the ones in greatest demand with a participation of 91%.

Low-end cell phones are basic, functional and lower-cost cell phones, whose FOB value ranges between US$20 and US$250. User preferences for these devices focus on the model, screen, camera and performance (battery and charging time).

Regarding mid-range mobile phones, the share is 6% in the Peruvian market; and high-end ones, 3%. China is the main supplier of low, medium and high-end cell phones with 73%, 62% and 69%, respectively.

Until August 2023, imports of cell phone headphones amounted to 6.5 million units, a drop of 31% compared to the same period in 2022.

In the case of wired headphones, the main supplier countries are China, with a share of 97%; Vietnam, with 2% and the United States, with 0.5%. Meanwhile, wireless headphones are mostly imported from China (98% share), Vietnam (1%) and Malaysia (0.5%).
