The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) reported that, with a year-on-year expansion of 25.7% in the last twelve months to August 2021, our country led the growth of non-traditional exports among the main economies in the region.
The larger shipments of agricultural products (mainly fruits), textiles, chemicals, fisheries, iron and steel, and non-metallic miners would explain this remarkable result.
Non-traditional exports rose to 1 million 387 thousand dollars in August, which implied a growth of 26.9% compared to August 2019, before the pandemic, due to the higher volumes shipped that advanced 26.6%.
Non-traditional exports grew at a year-on-year rate of 18% compared to August 2020. The volume of sales abroad grew by 9.5%, on the other hand, prices did so by 7.8%, in the period in reference.
August exports
Exports reached 9,992,000 dollars in the period from January to August, growing 13.2% compared to the same period in 2019 (35.8% compared to the period from January to August 2020).
In August 2021, foreign sales of fresh avocados grew 86.4% compared to the same month in 2019. On the other hand, blueberries grew 76.4% compared to the same month two years ago (9.3% compared to as of August 2019).
Asparagus exports
Fresh asparagus had a slight drop of 0.2% compared to August 2019, but a growth of 3.1% compared to the same month last year, as well as other products.
Between January and August 2021, with a growth of 40.5%, fresh avocado was the most sold product abroad compared to the same period in 2019 (43.3% compared to the same period in 2020). On the other hand, blueberries had an increase of 31.3% versus the same period in 2019 (17.2% compared to the January-August period of the previous year). Likewise, fresh asparagus increased 6.4% and 12% compared to the same periods in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
