According to Ministerial Resolution No. 0336-2023-MIDAGRI, published today in the legal regulations bulletin of El Peruano, it was resolved to declare the third Sunday of the month of October of each year, as “El Día del Chancho al Palo.” The standard bears the signature of the minister of the sector, Jennifer Contreras Álvarez.

In this regard, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) announced that, in Peru, pork is the third most consumed after chicken and beef. Thus, he specified that in 2020 alone, per capita consumption of pork reached 5.6 kg/inhabitant/year; and during the last 10 years, consumption has grown at an annual rate of 3.9%.

Additionally, there are 600,000 small rural producers, which represent 80% of the agricultural units dedicated to pig farming in the country.

In addition, the pig population in 2020 was 3.26 million (MIDAGRI, 2020), with the regions with the highest population being Lima (14.4%), Huánuco (12.3%) and Cajamarca (8.8%). . National pig production in 2020 was 169,805 tons, which grew at an average annual rate of 4.2% in the last decade. The most producing regions are Lima (43.2%), La Libertad (11.2%) and Arequipa (6.7%).
