Young people from Puno are certified as international Arabica coffee tasters

After six months of preparation, eight young people from Puno, children of coffee growers in the province of Sandia, achieved the international certification of Q Arabica Grader tastersawarded by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) through the School of Specialty Coffees (Ecafé).

Title Q Arabica Grader It is the highest grade offered for professional cuppers dedicated to quality control of Arabica coffee, the most widely grown species in the world and also in our country.

Its obtaining was promoted and financed by the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida) in alliance with the Central Coffee Agricultural Cooperatives of the Sandia Valleys (Cecovasa) and the Society for the Conservation of Wildlife (Wildlife Conservation Society, WCS).

Generational replacement

In the final stage towards certification, 12 people participated, who during six days of training took 19 rigorous exams. Of them, 8 young people from the coffee-growing districts of San Pedro de Putina Punco, Alto Inambari and San Juan del Oro.

Kit Kenedy Paye Sullca, Elvis Yanapa Cruz, Cristhian Vilca Apaza, Yaneth Yucra Limahuaya, Deysi Katya Apaza López, Mercy Sonali Esquivel Santi, Marcos Alfredo Colque Cárdenas and Laydi Maricielo Ramos Toque thus join the coffee sector and become exponents of generational change in this sector, which seeks to respond to international market trends.

For the entire previous process of training tasters, there was training and training from instructors Miguel Conco Sosa, Richard Velásquez and Edwin Quea, as well as the Devida Associativity team in the basic, intermediate and advanced stages, which then allowed the certification.

The new professionals will promote production, transformation, consumption and quality control to identify the best flavors and aromas of the special coffees of the Puno Amazon as a commitment to alternative development and the improvement of the sustainable economy of families.
