European Union would bring together suppliers of critical minerals

The European Union (EU) wants to relaunch its mining and thereby diversify its demand for minerals. Yesterday, during his speech at Perumin 36, the EU ambassador in Peru, Gaspar Frontini, pointed out that the community made up of 27 States plans to establish a club of countries that supply critical minerals, which are those elements that are at risk. of scarcity. “It is a proposal that could interest Peru,” he said.

Among the EU’s ambitions is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and, therefore, they have contemplated revitalizing the relationship of the Old Continent with Latin America to provide itself with the necessary minerals to help it with this plan for the environment.

Let us remember that the EU and our country have a trade agreement that is now 10 years old. According to Frontini, this has allowed Peruvian exports to enter a unified market of 450 million inhabitants. Based on this pact, in 2022, Peru has imported 4.5 billion euros from the EU and exported a total of 7.4 billion euros, the trade balance being positive for the country.

In this context, it should be noted that mining and metallurgical exports constitute 38% of the global exports.
