Agroexports grew at an average rate of 10.8% between 2018 and 2022

Between 2018 and 2022, Peruvian agro-exports (traditional and non-traditional) grew at an average rate of 10.8%, a lower performance than previous years, revealed the president of the Association of Exporters (Adex), Julio Pérez Alván.

During the inauguration of Expoalimentaria 2023, the export union considered it essential to accelerate the sanitary opening of national products, efficiently train micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), take advantage of the opportunities offered by new economies and put into practice the Law of Cabotage.

In this sense, Pérez Alván said that our country can achieve greater growth in agro-exports and improve its economy if it advances in improving the country’s competitiveness, reduces informality and restores the technical capabilities of public institutions.

In the opinion of Adex, the agro-export boom is due to the push of businessmen, the characteristics of the country, the trade opening policy and Law 27360, repealed at the end of 2020.

Pérez also warned of the decrease in crop productivity due to climate phenomena and high input costs. For this reason, he pointed out that the country as a whole must be “able to see the danger lights that come on on the horizon for this activity.”

“There are 15 years of exhibiting the best of our offer to thousands of international buyers. In 2009, Peru did not export any product from the agricultural sector for more than US$1,000 million, but in 2022 there were three: grapes, blueberries and coffee,” he stated at Expoalimentaria 2023.

Finally, he said that with initiatives such as Expoalimentaria and the strengthening of public-private work, more products and destinations will be added in the coming years.

“Despite global economic challenges, a 5% increase in global food demand is projected, providing promising opportunities for Peruvian foods,” he noted.

The data

Expoalimentaria 2023 will receive more than 1,200 international visitors from all 5 continents. It has international pavilions from Brazil, Ecuador, China and Indonesia, as well as other regional ones (Huánuco, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Ucayali, Cusco, Piura, Huancavelica, Loreto and Áncash).
