The potato production increased in the five main tuber producing departments during July of this year. They stood out La Libertad (147.7%), followed by Ica (48.7%), Huancavelica (35.5%), Junín (34.5%) and Huánuco (32.2%), which together contributed more than 50% to the country’s total production. It also grew in Pasco (99%), Ayacucho (98.2%) and Piura (68.8%), reported the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
However, the production of this tuber was reduced in Lima (-75.7%), Tacna (-54.9%), Cusco (-44.9%), Amazonas (-39.9%), Apurímac (- 34.9%), Arequipa (-32.2%), Cajamarca (-16.3%) and Áncash (-12.7%).
At the national level, Potato production amounted to 292,676 tons and showed an increase of 13.3% compared to July of the previous year (258,430 tons), driven by the larger harvested areas as a result of the good thermal conditions for the growth of the plantations and normal vegetative development of this crop.
Rice production fell 22%
The INEI, through the technical report ‘Peru: departmental economic panorama’, also reported that the production of husk rice, which is destined for the domestic market, decreased in the main producing area of the northern coast, which is Piura (-17.6 %), followed by Amazonas (-23.3%) and San Martín (-4.8%). Despite this, these three departments contributed 83.2% of the total produced. However, it increased in the departments of Ucayali (114.8%), Pasco (22.1%) and Huánuco (12.9%).
Throughout the country, paddy rice production totaled 268,123 tons, a volume 22.0% lower than that obtained in the same month of the previous year. This negative behavior was due to the reduction in harvested surfaces, influenced by adverse weather conditions that affected the ripening phase and caused phytosanitary problems in the crop.
Poultry production was affected in 22 departments
On the other hand, the INEI also indicated that poultry production showed a decrease in 22 departments, mainly in Arequipa (-6.4%) and La Libertad (-3.1%); However, these two regions concentrated more than 25.0% of the total produced. On the contrary, poultry production only increased in the departments of Ica (1.5%) and Lima (0.8%), registering a share of 5.4% and 55.4%, respectively, of the total production. poultry production.
At the national level, poultry production contracted by 1.2% compared to the same month in 2022, as a result of the lower placement of BB chickens in the meat line, given the high costs of food inputs, basically soy and corn.
