The population and housing census counted 16,938,986 people in Ecuador, the majority are women, and the greater concentration is reflected in urban areas, where 63.1% of the population and the other 36.9% are in urban areas.
The provinces of Guayas, Pichincha and Manabí concentrate 53.5% of the total population.
These are some of the results presented by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) this Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Quito.
More than 4 million households in Ecuador have at least one pet
In accordance with the culture and customs of the country, the majority of the population identifies as mestizo (77.4%), followed by the indigenous and Montuvian population (7.7%) and the Afro-Ecuadorian community (4.9%).
During the census, 6.6 million homes were visited.
“Households have opted for smaller spaces, in these twelve years the demographic transition is changing the face of Ecuador,” said INEC in a statement released during the presentation of the results.
The entity analyzes that “the average number of members of Ecuadorian households allows us to confirm that our households are smaller: with 3.2 members (as opposed to 4.2 in 2001 and 3.8 in 2010), although provinces such as Napo ( 3.7) and Santa Elena (3.6) ) have larger sizes, while Galapagos and Pichincha are the provinces that have the smallest household size with 2.9 and 3.1, respectively.”
