The 2022 Census of Population and Housing was the first to include pets, and now that the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) has presented the results, it is known that 4.1 million Ecuadorian households reported having at least one pet.
How many dogs and cats does the household have? It was one of the innovative questions of the population census process that was conducted between November and January last year.

The first results of the census show that 4 out of 10 households with children under 12 have dogs or cats.
This information contributes to the implementation of programs to regulate the possession, protection and control of urban fauna, INEC has indicated when the list will begin to indicate the usefulness of this data.
The last population census in the country was two years late, as it was supposed to be done in 2020, but could not be done due to the pandemic.
The results were announced this Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Quito.
Another of the new items in the questionnaire is the section on mortality, in which the question is asked whether any member of the household has died since January 2020 and whether the cause of death was an accident, suicide or murder, COVID-19 or another disease or natural death.
Data disclosed by INEC shows that in the last three years, 247,955 households reported that at least one person in that household died. While 96,236 families said that one of their members left the country and did not return.
