Most regions of Peru continue to show a low level of competitiveness, slow growth and similar to that of 10 years ago, according to the Peruvian Regional Competitiveness Index (ICRP) 2023 from the Centrum PUCP.
According to the study that takes into account five pillars (economy, government, infrastructure, companies and people), metropolitan Lima leads the ranking with a score of 62.3, on a scale of 0 to 100 points, registering 2.2 points more than last year and placing itself within a medium-low level of competitiveness.
They are followed by Moquegua (47), Callao (44.6), Arequipa (42.4) and Ica (38.6), maintaining their positions compared to the previous year, but with higher scores. The growth of Moquegua and Callao rose 5.7 and 6.4 points, respectively.
In contrast, the regions that occupy the last positions are Cajamarca (26.6), Amazonas (25.4), Ucayali (24.7), Huánuco (23.8) and Huancavelica (21.8).
It should be noted that 18 regions maintain extremely low competitiveness, 6 very low and only 1 low (see infographic).
The variations in the results, both positive and negative, indicate a trend of recovery of pre-pandemic levels in the regions, in some faster than in others, as is the case of Tumbes (which goes from 23.6 to 29.1 points) .
According to the ICRP, the regions that managed to restore their levels of competitiveness were those that faced the lowest incidence of social conflicts in the last year.
Results by pillars
In the economy pillar, almost all regions have registered higher scores than the previous year, except Lambayeque
In the government pillar, metropolitan Lima is the only region that reaches a high level with 77.8 points.
Likewise, in the infrastructure pillar, metropolitan Lima maintains the leadership, followed by Arequipa.
In the business pillar, Loreto maintains first place with 67.4 points, while in the people pillar, the capital again maintains leadership.
The data
