Julio Velarde: Latin America is not taking advantage of the opportunity to attract external capital

The president of Central Reserve Bank (BCRP)Julio Velarde Flores, pointed out during his participation in the Congressional Budget Commission, that in a turbulent global context, where economies such as the United States, the European Union and China are facing each other, there is a fertile field to attract capital; However, neither Peru nor other countries in the region are taking advantage of this scenario.

“With the confrontation that is taking place with the United States, Europe, versus China, there is the possibility of relocating investments, but no Latin American country is taking advantage. Some Mexico that has an industrial base, which already exports to the United States, and a little Costa Rica. But I don’t see that any Latin American country (is taking advantage of) that enormous potential,” said the president of the BCRP.

He added that with respect to Asia, there is no Latin American country except Mexico that is connected to commercial value chains. “There are Asian countries that are connected,” she said.

It should be noted that developed economies such as the United States, the Eurozone, Japan and the United Kingdom have improved their growth projections when a recessive scenario was expected at the beginning of the year. “The majority of analysts rule out a recession in the United States, this economy will remain quite vigorousand although China—which is the second largest economy in the world—maintains certain structural problems, it is expected that these will not manifest themselves strongly yet either this year or next,” he indicated.
