Pashinyan said that Armenia can no longer rely on Russia

Armenia can no longer rely on Russia as a guarantor of its security. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this in an interview with Politico Europe, excerpts are provided by the Armenpress.am portal.

“Russia’s capabilities have changed as a result of events in Ukraine…Armenia can no longer rely on Moscow as a guarantor of its security, even as fears grow about a return to open conflict with Azerbaijan,” Pashinyan said.

According to Pashinyan, Moscow is now trying to avoid alienating Azerbaijan and Turkey, whose strategic importance for the Kremlin has increased. “Our strategy should be to try in this situation to reduce our dependence on others as much as possible,” the Armenian prime minister added.

According to media reports, when the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalated in 2020, it was Russian peacekeepers who were deployed to maintain the ceasefire. Now Russia is fully involved in the conflict in Ukraine, and concerns are growing in Yerevan about whether Russian soldiers are willing or able to keep peace in the Caucasus.

The day before, Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan reproached Russia. In an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, he said that Armenia’s dependence on Russia in the field of security is a mistake. According to him, “today, when Russia needs weapons and ammunition, it is clear that even if it wanted, the Russian Federation would not be able to provide for Armenia’s security needs.” At the same time, Russia, according to the Prime Minister of Armenia, is moving away from it due to its actions or inaction in the South Caucasus. He also reproached Moscow for the fact that the Russian peacekeeping forces are not fulfilling their mission according to the tripartite statement of November 9, 2020; they do not control the Lachin corridor to Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, Russia either cannot or does not want to maintain control over this corridor.
