Selling a used vehicle is not an easy mission, because it is necessary to first analyze its condition and what its future owner will be like. And that task can be even more complicated when the vehicle is used a lot, which makes it less attractive, according to experts.
However, it is not impossible to sell and there are two possibilities: for the owner to sell the vehicle himself or through a dealership. Experts highlight the advantages and disadvantages of these two scenarios, which are summarized in time and money.
By July of this year, 80,855 cars were sold, an increase of 8.1% compared to units sold in the same period in 2022, which were 74,794, according to the Association of Automobile Companies of Ecuador (Aeade). And there were 10,826 of them in new vehicles alone.
These are the eight differences between a sedan and an SUV
According to Automotores Continental, a Chevrolet dealer, the main advantage is A citizen sells his vehicle independently in order to achieve a better price. Óscar Guarín, commercial manager of the Maresa center, agrees with this.
“The only advantage is that you will get a higher price by selling directly. However, I highlight the issue of security as you have seen in recent weeks and several people have been robbed or even kidnapped in the process of selling their used (cars), explains Guarín.
And adds that the owner also I would avoid all “bureaucratic” procedures in the process of buying and selling. Automotive Continental also agrees with this and adds that procedures take place at notaries, transfers and time would be saved in negotiations.
What is the price?
According to Automotores Continental and the Maresa Center, the value of this operation is priceless. “However, you don’t have to pay anything, the acceptance price is less than the retail price to the end customer, depending on the model being accepted, between $500 and $2,500,” explains the Chevrolet dealer.
Political uncertainty affects new car sales: 10,826 were sold last July, 749 fewer than in the same month in 2022.
While Guarín points out that there is no value and that it is part of the service. “It must be taken into account that obviously the vehicle must have all taxes up to date and no penalty or any value pending payment,” emphasizes Guarín.
What happens if I decide to buy a new vehicle from the dealership that sells my car?
Guarín states that the process consists of signing and delivering the vehicle. “Always sign a power of attorney or agency agreement,” says Guarín. Continental Automotive highlights other details such as valuation.
“Visual assessment and test drive are carried out in authorized service centers, which takes a maximum of 30 minutes. If any mechanical problem is detected, for example, gearbox, turbine failure, etc., the assessment can be extended by three hours,” explains the dealership. .
And other points:
Guarín argues that the value of the used car is paid for the new vehicle being purchased. The price depends on the model, year and mileage.
Can the dealership sell a vehicle that is not in the owner’s name?
Yes, it can be carried out, says Guarín, as long as you provide supporting documentation.
“The dealer creates an additional document that the owner of the used vehicle must sign in which he transfers the values to a third party,” explains Automotores Continental.
Nationally, 74,794 cars were sold in 2022; in 2021, there were 64,479; In 2020, there were about 40,752, and in 2019, there were more with 76,766, according to Aeade.
