Osinergmin: last wave had a minor impact on the supply of LPG

The president of the Supervisory Body for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin), Omar Chambergo Rodríguezpointed out this morning that the impact of the last anomalous wave on the Peruvian coast was minor on the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

However, he highlighted that the fact that ships cannot unload generates a feeling of shortage of supplies in the country due to storage infrastructure limitations.

“We are reporting this (the waves) properly to prevent these speculations from being generated in such a way that – in the last one we reported in a timely manner – the market was duly communicated and the impact was much smaller,” he stated during his participation in the Commission of Congressional Consumer Advocacy.

LPG terminal in Villa el Salvador

On the other hand, the president of Osinergmin announced today morning that the Monte Azul company has begun the process of submitting the required documentation for the future installation of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal in the south of Lima, specifically in the district of Villa El Salvador.

“They (Monte Azul) are presenting the documentation, we are going to evaluate, and we are precisely working on being able to do the evaluations quickly so that this can be built in a short time,” he commented.

However, Chambergo Rodríguez emphasized that, more than simply having new storage infrastructure to lower the price of fuel, it is necessary to reduce our dependence on imported fuels. To achieve this, he explained, it is essential to review the country’s energy matrix and adopt policies that promote the consumption of natural gas.

In this sense, he stressed that 77% of the LPG consumed in the country comes from national production and the remaining 23% is imported. Therefore, international events such as the jamming of ships in the Panama Canal have a direct impact on the local prices of this fuel.
