The Minister of Economy and Finance, Alex Contreras, recently declared in a Sunday newspaper that, given the rise in lemon prices, citizens should stop eating ceviche and consume other dishes. This generated a shower of criticism. For this reason, the head of the MEF spoke again about this issue in the Economy Commission of the Congress of the Republic and apologized.

What did Minister Alex Contreras say in the Economy Commission?

“If I was not clear or assertive enough in my message, I will correct myself. But we are taking measures,” said official Contreras. Furthermore, he explained that the shortage is due to a delayed effect of the El Niño phenomenon because the lemon tree did not produce fruit, which reduced its supply.

He also announced that they are coordinating with the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation to provide more information about price monitoring and that they will increase the budget of soup kitchens and common pots so that they can afford their products.

Finally, Contreras Miranda pointed out that last week he was in Piura and the Poechos reservoir was at 50% of its capacity, which is why, in the long term, he wants to build infrastructure, such as a water reservoir. That was the main reason for the creation of the National Infrastructure Authority (ANIN).
