Who is Raúl Pérez-Reyes, the new Minister of Transport and Communications?

Due to the crisis in the ministerial cabinet, the president of the republic, Dina Boluarte, appointed six new ministers this afternoon. One of them is Raúl Pérez-Reyes Espejo, who assumes as Minister of Transport and Communications, replacing the economist Paola Lazarte Castillo. Lazarte was in charge of said portfolio since December 13, 2022. It is not the first time that Pérez-Reyes has served as a public official.

Who is Raúl Pérez-Reyes?

Raúl Ricardo Pérez-Reyes Espejo is an economist, with more than 20 years of experience in the public sector. Born on July 3, 1965 in Peruvian territory, he graduated from the University of Lima, the house of studies where he obtained his professional degree on behalf of the nation. He also has a master’s degree from the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas AC de México and a doctorate from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain.

At the labor level, he has served as financial and administrative director of the Peruvian Association of Authors and Composers, consultant on regulatory issues in the electricity sector, telecommunications consultant, member of the Board of Directors of Petroperú, and was Minister of Production in the government of Martin Vizcarra.

In his resume he has an important step through institutions such as Indecopi, Osiptel, Osinergmin and Apdayc. Likewise, it is not the first time that he has worked at the MTC, since he was previously Vice Minister of Communications, between August 2011 and December 2014. In addition, he served as Vice Minister of Energy, between March 2015 and February 2017. Since January of last year he had been serving as Minister of Production, after the departure of Sandra Belaunde.
