Smaller operators gain ground in mobile telephony

Having almost a dozen operators that offer mobile telephony service has allowed a reordering of market share, and with it offers that fit the profile of each user.

According to Osiptel, in the first half of 2023, 41.14 million mobile lines were registered, a slight growth of 0.09% compared to the same period in 2022, but in which Entel and Bitel were the ones that increased their participation the most. in the market with 1.30% and 1.42%, respectively.

For its part, Claro rose 0.15% and reaffirmed its leadership status – recently obtained this year – covering 29.96% (12.3 million mobile lines). Movistar lost 2.90% and occupies 28.23% of the market (11.6 million); Entel with 22.82% (9.39 million); and Bitel with 18.52%, which is equivalent to 7.6 million.

Other companies such as Flash Mobile, Guinea Mobile, Suma Móvil and Dolphin Mobile together added 193,083 lines, which represents 0.47%.

“Peru is establishing itself as the second most competitive mobile market in South America. The distance between the largest and the smallest operators is barely 10%,” said Carlos Huamán, executive director of DN Consultores.

An element that would help the deployment of coverage is the proposal of the Ministry of Transport on the sharing of Active Infrastructure. “The operators will be able to sell in new geographical sites, without the need to deploy a network,” Huamán explained.

Huamán clarifies that, having such a competitive scenario, the customers’ decision will also be subject to added factors such as rate plan updates and discounts. Post-sale attention to claims also has a key role. In July, Movistar concentrated 70.84% ​​of complaints and Claro, 19%.
