In August alone, the price of lemons rose 70% in Metropolitan Lima, which affected the pockets of families who have had to reduce their consumption due to its high cost. For this reason, in view of this situation, the Peruvian Association of Consumers and Users (Aspec) urged the Executive power to lead concrete actions in relation to the serious problem implied by the excessive increase in staple foods.
In this sense, Aspec asked the Government that promotes the creation of a high-level group, the same one that would be in charge of allocating the resources to determine what are the causes of this price increase, which, in the opinion of the union, seems concerted and would imply a abuse of economic power to the detriment of consumers. Besides, this team would have to investigate if there is speculationa crime that is consigned in the Penal Code.
The working group proposed by Aspec should be led by the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, and made up of the National Prosecutor and the President of the Power of attorney. The ministries of the Interior, Agrarian Development and Irrigation, and Production, as well as Indecopi, would also form part of this team.
“These institutions, each within the scope of their respective competencies, can contribute to clarifying the true causes of such a bulging increase in the cost of prices and, if this is the case, identify those responsible so that they can be prosecuted, something that has never happened before and which generates a sensation of impunity. This request must be taken into account because I am very afraid that the worst is yet to come,” said Crisólogo Cáceres, president of Aspec.
