Ministry of Production will decide to open the second fishing season in October

The owner of the Ministry of Production (Produces), Raul Perez Reyes Espejoreported this morning that His office hopes to make a decision on the opening of a new fishing season for this year in October.

In this context, the minister highlighted that, currently, the Institute of the Sea of Peru (immarpe) is monitoring the reproduction of the anchovy and simultaneously is making measurements of the available biomass. “Towards the first or second week of October we should have the first results, which should ask us whether or not it is possible to have a second season.” he said at a press conference.

According to the minister, one reason for optimism is that during the last exploratory fishing it was observed that a significant part of the anchoveta juveniles measured between 10.5 and 11.5 centimeters, approaching the size necessary to be considered adults (12 centimeters). “The anchovy grows depending on the moment, the weather, between half a centimeter and one centimeter per month. In such a way that by the first or second week of October we would expect a very good part of these juveniles to be adults,” he remarked.

In addition, the minister mentioned that during the first season there were 6.5 million tons of anchovy and 1.1 million tons were reserved for reproduction, but, since the season began, only 200,000 tons have been taken in exploratory fishing. . This means that there are still 900,000 tons of biomass left in the sea, which, added to the presence of juveniles, could indicate an abundant biomass available for the next season.

However, Pérez Reyes Espejo emphasized that the The success of the season will also depend on natural factors, such as sea temperature and the geographic and latitudinal dispersion of the species. Measurements will be made to assess the presence of juveniles in different areas of the country.
