Why does the S/1 coin alluding to the bicentennial of Congress cost more than S/140?

As happens with the issuance of the different numismatic series, he Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) puts into circulation new models of S/1 coins alluding to commemorative events or representative characters of our history. For this reason, the entity has a coin on the occasion of the bicentennial of Congress and what has generated astonishment is its price. Anyone who wishes to acquire it must pay S/147. Why does the new S/1 currency of the BCRP cost S/147?

Through information from BCRP, The cost of this coin lies mainly in its material, since it is an alloy with 0.925% silver. Additionally, only 5,000 units of this coin have been issued, which gives it a numismatic value, that is, it serves as a collector’s item as it is a limited product.

On the back of this collector’s item, there is the image of a real sculptural group (it is located in the central part of the main façade of the current building of the Congress of the Republic). The central female figure represents the Political Constitution. The female figure on the left represents justice and the one on the right represents the law. In the upper part, the text “1822 – Bicentennial – 2022” is shown and, in the lower part, the phrase “Congreso de la República”.

On the obverse, there is the coat of arms, the text “Banco Central de Reserva del Perú”, the year of issue and the denomination of the coin in words (“Un Sol”).
