The prices of lemon they have no time to stop and now the unit of this essential product in the national basic basket is sold for S/1 in the markets of Lambayeque, even when, precisely, the northern regions are the producers in our country.
The Republic made a tour this Wednesday, August 30, through the Modelo and Central markets of the city of Chiclayo, where he was able to verify that lemon, an essential ingredient in the preparation of dishes such as ceviche and various garnishes, continues to increase due to the low supply. The unit reached the price of S/ 1.
In conversation with this medium, the merchant Walter Calderón, dedicated for 40 years to the sale of lemons in the model marketreported that that same Wednesday he purchased a mesh of 1,000 lemons for a total of S/650, which previously cost approximately S/ 120.
This leads him to sell the largest units for S/1 each, while the medium and small ones can be offered for three for S/2 or S/0.50 per unit. A record that we have seen in recent years, since El Niño in 2017.
“For each mesh I am earning between S/80 or S/100. There is a shortage of the product and that is affecting sales. Housewives who previously bought for a quarter or half a hundred, now take three or four units for their salads. We we have to continue releasing the product, because if it is not spoiled and our investment is lost,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, in the central Market from Chiclayo, it was possible to find regular quality lemons that are sold at six units for S/5, an almost similar reference price.
Businessman Percy Saavedra showed his empty basket of small lemons, because consumers are choosing to take smaller ones, but in larger quantities. In this regard, he expressed that currently there are only five towns that are dedicated to the sale of this project, due to its scarcity and high price.
The merchants stated that a lot of lemon is arriving from Piura, exactly from Chulucanas, which is replacing the one produced in the Olmos district (Lambayeque).
The data
Piura is the main lemon-producing region in our country with 16,904 cultivated hectares, according to the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa).
Other important producing regions in the country are Lambayeque, Tumbes, Loreto and Ucayali, which rank second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in terms of area planted with lemon.
