Alex Contreras: 4 international companies have an interest in the petrochemical plant

This morning, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Alex Contrerashighlighted that among the most important initiatives to promote private investment is the construction of a petrochemical plant in Peru. In this sense, he revealed that there are currently four companies interested in this project.

The head of the MEF He explained that it is a Chilean company, an American company, another from Australia and one more of Colombian origin.

The petrochemical plant will require an investment of between US$2,000 million and US$11,000 million, and will help reduce vulnerability and dependency on imported inputs.

“The idea is that this petrochemical plant can produce explosives for mining, that allows us to gain competitiveness and also urea for the agricultural sector,” Contreras remarked during the presentation of the Multiannual Macroeconomic Framework 2024-2027.

Likewise, the head of the MEF explained that, if the Congress of the Republic approves the second package of legislative powers, it is possible to have an award schedule starting in December.

“The project can materialize quickly because there are already petrochemical studies; So, if the petrochemical industry is reactivated, there will be a positive side effect,” he commented.

Finally, he announced that both the construction of the petrochemical plants and the Integrated Gas Transportation System – Southern Zone of Peru could be executed in parallel.

Meetings will begin for the creation of ZEE

The port hub is already a reality, assured yesterday the Minister of Economy and Finance, Alex Contreras, at a press conference.

In this sense, he highlighted that the south dock and the north dock are in the process of being executed. While the port of Chacay is with an advance of between 80% and 85%. In addition, he highlighted that the Ancón industrial park should be awarded this year.

“This year we should close the creation of the special economic zone (ZEE) with a different look. First, that it be managed by the private sector. Second, that it seeks to promote sectors where we have potential and where we can grow more. And third, that it also seeks to attract sectors, in particular we are interested in high technology, ”he said.

Likewise, Contreras announced that the first meetings will begin next week to decide how to build this special economic zone.

“There is an IDB mission coming this week and we want all these strategies to advance in parallel. The electricity promotion is advancing. There are shipyards that want to invest in Peru. We are generating the conditions,” he said.

Finally, the head of the MEF emphasized that the port hub will be a great contribution to the potential GDP of the country and will allow Peru to become the export platform of Latin America.
