Will there be a total shortage of lemon in Peru? This was said by the producers of Tumbes

Worrying outlook. Faced with a significant increase in the price of lemon, producers carried out an analysis on the next productions of this citrus in the following months in Peru. So far, a kilo of this input is around S/12 and affects the family basket.

Will there be a total shortage of lemon in Peru?

The president of the committee of producers of Sacred Heart lemon in Tumbes, Juan Arica Lavalle, explained to Exitosa that the situation of this basic ingredient is worrisome. because there is a very low production in the north.

According to Arica, previously in tumbes They managed to extract up to 20 lemon meshes from one hectare of cultivation. However, currently only half a mesh is being extracted, and even in buckets, from one hectare. “The lemon has not flowered as it should. The minimum is being removed ”, she asserted to said medium.

For this reason, in the coming months, there will be low production and this will only improve a bit at the end of 2023. “Yes, there will be, but not in such a large quantity. From the month of November or December (…) we will already be able to have lemon ”, he clarified.

Therefore, there will not be a total shortage in the coming months in Peru, but it will remain at a higher price than usual and it will be regularized from November. In addition, he reported that lemons usually come from Ecuador, but this does not have the same quality as the Peruvian production.

What is the reason for the increase in the price of lemon?

The producer clarified that the increase is due to the shortage caused by various factors. “It is not only El Niño Costero, climate change, fertilization and flooding are affecting them. The plots fill with water, that water heats up and affects the plant and no longer produces. I am extremely worried. Piura and Tumbes are in the same lemon problem. We do not have a contingency plan ”, he referred to Exitosa.

Due to this context, Arica Lavalle requested that the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation adopt measures in the absence of effective projects for the delivery of fertilizers to farmers.
