Taking into account the start of classes in the Sierra region, the pilgrimage of Virgen de El Cisna in Loja and other “special” situations, the Agency for the Regulation and Control of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources (ARCERNNR) has decided to increase the premium diesel quota for 166 gas stations throughout the country.
The decision, according to the state entity, comes after meetings held between August 18 and 24 with the Ministry of Energy and Mining, the Tax Administration (SRI) and Petroecuador.
Gas stations with quotas for the sale of premium diesel increased from 109 to 455 in less than a month, most of them in Pichincha
“Continuous monitoring of the distribution centers of the automotive segment has been carried out to ensure the supply of fuel in all the provinces of the country, taking into account the start of classes in the Sierra region, the pilgrimage of the Virgen de El Cisna to the province of Loja and the special situations of certain gas stations that are the main pillars of supply city halls, decentralized autonomous governments -GAD- and other institutions,” the press release states.
According to the Regulatory Agency, a total of 697,000 additional gallons of premium diesel will reach 166 gas stations.

The move comes after the ARCERNNR reported an increase in the number of gas stations in the second week of August that were imposed a premium diesel quota system, to prevent irregular and improper use of this fuel. So they came from 109 to 455 gas stations.
Petroecuador supplied the most fuel to the automotive sector in the first half of 2023.
The agency stated that this measure has been applied since August and that it was adopted after a joint table with the Ministry of Energy and Mining, the Tax Administration and Petroecuador, after reviewing the latter’s report, which noted that in the first half of the year, the automotive segment was the place where the most premium diesel was delivered compared to the same period in 2022.
The President of the National Chamber of Petroleum Products Distributors of Ecuador (Camddepe) Ivo Rosero pointed out that they have requested three times an urgent meeting with the Minister of Energy Fernando Santos and the Director of ARCERNNR to clarify the problem. and the quota measures are revised, which in his opinion affect various sectors in the country, including heavy transport, added to the deficit registered in Cuenca.
In mid-July, Petroecuador reported that of the 1,813,596,451 gallons of liquid fuels obtained from petroleum throughout the country, the automotive sector received 1,132,944,609. Meanwhile, the remaining amount, i.e. more than 600 million, was allocated to the industrial sectors (369’243,134), international maritime (150’343,315), air (57’065,120), national maritime (53’379,259), special industrial (29′ 601,123) and artisanal fishing (21,019,892).
