Hats from Ecuador now go to Machu Picchu

The Ecuadorian company Sombreros Shaman, dedicated to the production and elaboration of this product made of toquilla straw, wool, leather, jute and cabuya palm, made its first export to Peru.

On this occasion, the client from a neighboring country ordered 150 hats: 80 leather and 70 felt, after visiting a store in Otavalo, in the province of Imbabura. “We presented our hats and he was pleased,” said Carlos Rojas, the company’s owner.

Fifteen years ago, the company started exporting its products to its strongest market, which is the USA, and it also does so in Europe.

The current goal is to open a store in the United States. In the hot season, toquilla straw hats are exported, and in the cold season, woolen ones are exported, Rojas said.

On the other hand, the owner pointed out that his products are “appreciated by foreign tourists who especially visit Machu Picchu”.

The company currently has four associates who use the machines to make hats. The production time depends on the material: a hat made of toquilla straw takes one day, a wool hat takes 25 minutes, and a leather hat takes 20 minutes.
