The principle of operation of satellite communications on Android smartphones is described

Google implements the advent of satellite communications on smartphones running Android OS. This is reported by SamMobile.

Media journalists referred to the developer Neil Rahmouni, who found a mention of the satellite function in the beta version of Android. The specialist noted that the operating principle of the new option was described in the OS code.

Rahmouni explained that in emergencies and in the absence of cellular coverage, users will be able to receive and send text messages through the Garmin satellite system, which will partner with Google. The authors noted that, in turn, Garmin is collaborating with Iridium, which manages a constellation of satellites in Earth orbit. Communication will be carried out through the built-in Google Messages messenger.

According to insiders, the new feature will appear along with the public release of Android 14 and will be available in more than 150 countries around the world. Experts did not specify the cost of the service.

Apple was the first company to mass-produce satellite connectivity on its smartphones. In early August, it became known that the Emergency SOS option was used, among other things, to fight forest fires.
