Electrified vehicles have grown by 44% in sales and already have a 9% market share

Despite the fact that the second half of the year started in an atypical way for the automotive industry with the first sales slump in 2023, when 749 fewer vehicles were sold last July, -6.5% compared to July 2022, the good performance of the previous months helped sector to grow 8.1% in accumulated sales, between January and July this year, with 80,855 units sold compared to 74,794 sold in the same period last year, according to figures from the Association of Automobile Companies of Ecuador (Aeade).

However, there were also segments that stood up for the industry at the beginning of the second half of the year. One of them is commercial vehicles (vans, buses and trucks) which, although they recorded a 4% drop in the sale of trucks, a 16% and a 20% growth in the commercialization of passenger vehicles and vans, reflected in the segment a total growth of 4%.

Electrified vehicles are growing in sales and market share

However, hybrid and electric vehicles stood out the most in the automotive industry this month. The commercialization of this type of car increased by 44% in July this year compared to the same month last year. In addition, this increased the participation of electrified vehicles in the Ecuadorian market, reaching 9% this month, the highest on record, Aeade noted.

Electrified vehicles include HEV (conventional hybrid), PHEV (plug-in hybrid), EREV (extended range electric) and BEV (battery electric) technologies.

The drop in sales was felt in Quito due to political uncertainty and the proximity of elections

Meanwhile, Aeade confirmed the decline in sales of other segments, especially light vehicles, due to “political uncertainty, as the proximity of the presidential elections affected sales in Quito, where an important part of the workforce is in the public sector.”
