Coffee production contracted in 8 regions during June: which ones are affected?

The coffee production decreased in eight departments during June. The regions that presented negative figures were: Freedom (-69.8%), Lambayeque (-56.9%), ayacucho (-23.6%), ucayali (-21.3%), Pasco (-11.3%), Amazon (-9.8%), piura (-3.6%) and Cusco (-0.8%), according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in it technical report Peru: Departmental Economic Panorama.

On the other hand, the coffee-growing areas located in San Martín (8.6%), Huánuco (1.8%), Cajamarca (1.8%), Junín (0.9%) and Puno (0.1%).

At the national level, the total production of this grain reached 82,734 tons, which represents a decrease of 1.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, when 84,308 tons were registered.

According to the INEI, this decrease is attributed to adverse weather conditions, which were reflected in an increase in rainfall and the consequent appearance of fungal diseases, such as yellow rust.

Potato production grew in nine regions

On the other hand, INEI detailed that in the sixth month of the year potato production improved in nine departments. The greatest increases were observed in Puno, with a growth of 139.9%; followed by Piura, with a solid increase of 85.2%. Similarly, Arequipa experienced growth of 39.7%, Huancavelica 25.8%, La Libertad 23.1%, Apurímac 16.5%, Áncash 16.2%, Tacna 8.2% and Huánuco del 7.0%.

While the most notable decreases occurred in Ica (-99.6%), Lima (-41.6%), Amazonas (-30.4%), Cusco (-19.6%), Cajamarca (-7, 3%), Junín (-6.8%), Ayacucho (-6.0%), Pasco (-5.5%) and Moquegua (-5.4%).

At the national level, the total production of this tuber reached 819,987 tons, which represents a significant increase of 8.3%, compared to June 2022 (757,233 tons). This increase is explained by the increase in harvest areas and the normal vegetative development of the crop.
