Artisanal fishermen from the region, Asia and Europe will meet this week in Guayaquil to address the challenges of the activity

This August 29 and 30, Guayaquil will be the meeting place for delegations of small fishermen from different countries, such as Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Spain, Portugal and China. This is within the framework of the National and International Congress of Artisanal Fishing and Aquaculture organized by the National Federation of Fishermen’s Cooperatives of Ecuador (Fenacopec).

This union is a non-profit organization representing the artisanal fishing cooperatives of Ecuador. The organization was founded in 1988 with headquarters in Guayaquil.

The meeting will be held in the hall of the Central Bank of Ecuador in the city of Guayaquil, and its main objectives are to generate concrete proposals that will become public policies in favor of the rights of fishermen and artisanal fish farmers in the country, as well as the preservation of hydrobiological resources, according to the union.

One of these proposals is the creation of social security for artisanal fishing and a contribution to the reform of the Act on the Insurance of Peasants, the Act on the Safety of People at Sea and the Regulation of the Act on Aquaculture and Fisheries and Institutionalities.

“At the congress, which strives to create a favorable space for dialogue and the construction of joint solutions, delegates from craft-fishing cooperatives from all over the country, as well as representatives of the public, private and academic sectors, will participate,” it was pointed out from Fenacopec, who emphasized that the event is an opportunity for representatives of these sectors to commit to working together to support the sector and guarantee its sustainability.

In addition, during the congress, fishermen and artisanal fish farmers from Ecuador share their experiences, challenges and proposals for the future of the sector.

According to official data, from 2021 to date, the undersecretary for fisheries resources has issued 27,676 licenses across the country, of which 14,729 were delivered to artisanal fishermen, 8,567 to smaller vessels and 4,380 to traders, which allowed for the regulation of actors in the sector. , in accordance with what is established by the Organic Law for the development of aquaculture and fisheries in the country.
