Midagri: 1 million 652 thousand turkeys will be sold at Christmas and New Years parties

Local production will offer one million 652 thousand units of turkeys to meet the demand of Peruvian families in the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays 2022, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

The report of the General Directorate of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies of MIDAGRI, indicates that the supply of turkeys will be higher by 38.3% compared to what was registered in last year’s campaign, despite the impacts generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will increase the national production of turkeys

Midagri estimates that 1 million 224 thousand units will be sold in the different supermarket chains and corporate sales as frozen whole turkey and 428 thousand units in the Poultry Distribution Centers as live turkey.

“The range of average commercial weight of frozen processed turkey will range from 5 to 12 kilograms per unit and between 7.0 to 11.0 kilograms for sale as live turkey,” said the Ministry.

In addition, he indicated that the national production of turkey in units in 2021, will increase by 14.2% compared to 2020.

“Of the total volume of national production, 79% is destined for processing as whole turkey and 21% as chopped turkey. Of the total whole turkey benefited, 68.1% is aimed at the traditional Christmas and New Year holidays, while 31.4% is conducted through the regular national sale and 0.5% is exported as frozen whole turkey ”He added.

Turkey imports and exports

Midagri reported that this year turkey meat imports will reach 9,371 tons, a quantity 13.4% higher than what was imported in 2020. The main origins are the United States, Chile and Brazil.

Meanwhile, exports of this meat will reach 155 tons, growing by 74.2% compared to the previous year.
