In the midst of discussions about a possible increase in the minimum wage, the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Alex Contreras, has emphasized that any increase in the minimum vital wage (RMV) must be implemented in a framework of economic recovery. Likewise, he reiterated that the methodology that the proposal would have must first be defined.
“With the support of the Ministry of Labor and with the coordination between workers and businessmen, a good port can be reached, what we want to do is find a balance between generating a boost to the consumption of workers, but without affecting the recovery of the economy because there are many companies hit,” Contreras declared this Friday, August 25.
As recalled, during her presidential message, Dina Boluarte assured that an increase in salaries could be announced “soon”, after having restored the social dialogue between trade unions and business associations in the National Council for Labor and Employment Promotion (CNTPE). .
However, the Executive maintains that the measure should be implemented at the right time, which raises uncertainty about the progress of this proposal.
“It has to happen by consensus. The MEF will provide technical support, for example, in estimating productivity, a variable that is difficult to measure, and what should be the relevant inflation”, added Contreras.
For his part, Julio César Bazán, leader of the Unitary Central of Workers of Peru (CUT – Peru), previously indicated in a conversation with La República that it is unlikely that the president’s announcement will materialize in the short term. He argued that the business associations do not prioritize the issue of the RMV on the CNTPE’s agenda.
