Petroperú completed the start-up maneuvers of the key units of the New Talara Refinery (NRT), Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and Flexicoking (FCK). With this, the start-up of operations begins, allowing the processing of up to 95,000 barrels of oil daily.
These innovative units transform heavy crude residues into products of high demand and commercial value, with quality standards that guarantee greater profitability for Petroperú. Thus, the state company enters the era of cutting-edge refining, like the most important refining complexes in the world.
Characteristics of the new NRT units
The technology of the unit Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (FCC) It has a license from the American company Honeywell UOP, which allows Petroperú to process heavy diesel for the production of high-octane gasoline, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
On the other hand, the unit Flexicoking (FCK), with state-of-the-art technology licensed by Exxon Mobil, unique in seven leading refineries in the world, converts heavy crude residues into value-added products, including flexigas. The latter is a coke-derived fuel that reduces natural gas consumption and will feed both the furnace and boiler network and electricity generation, which will be self-sufficient.
The startup of FCC and FCK is complemented by the desulfurization units, in operation since February 2023. This will strengthen the production of clean fuels, with sulfur levels below 50 parts per million, to meet market demand.
When will the commercialization of LPG begin in the north of the country?
With the New Talara Refinery in its operation and optimization phase to supply the national market, The commercialization of LPG in the north of the country will become a reality on September 1, as soon as the necessary inventories are available.
The NRT has been designed to process light and heavy crudes such as those produced in the country and other parts of the world for the generation of fuels with low sulfur content. In this stage of optimization and continuous production, the NRT does not depend on any specific type of heavy crude, since it is prepared to process the different types that exist in the national and international market.
