Private investment fell by 8.3% in the second quarter of 2023

The private investment in the second quarter of the year it reached S/26,400 million, which meant a fall of 8.3% fCompared to the S/28,778 million registered in the same period of the previous year, according to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP).

In this way, the decline in private investment is confirmed for the fourth consecutive quarter after having fallen 12% in the first quarter of 2023, and -4.1% and -0.5% in the fourth and third quarters of last year, respectively.

According to the BCRP, the negative performance in the April-June 2023 period is attributed to the low level of business confidence —affected by social conflicts and adverse weather events— and the loss of the impulse of self-construction.

It should be remembered that between January and June 2023, the construction sector contracted by 9% after accumulating six in a row with negative figures. The month with the worst performance for this economic activity was May, with a 12.3% drop.

For its part, in the second quarter of 2023, public investment expanded 3.1% year-on-year after the greater execution of the National Government in infrastructure projects.
