The demand for energy has increased by 22% in the last ten years. As in the last decade, the transport sector remains the largest consumer of energy with 49% of demand, followed by the industrial sector with 18% and the residential sector with 13%. These are some of the results of the National Energy Balance (BEN) report for 2022, which was presented last Wednesday by the Ministry of Energy and Mining.
According to the report, 74% of electricity was produced from hydroelectric power plants, 24% from thermal power plants (diesel, fuel oil and natural gas), and 2% from other sources. Likewise, the demand for electricity in 2022 at the national level increased by 4% compared to 2021. The total demand was 22,132 gigawatt hours (GWh). Furthermore, last year Ecuador imported 466 gigawatts per hour and exported 192 gigawatts per hour.
BEN integrates annual electricity, hydrocarbon, social and economic information to provide a global and dynamic vision of the energy sector in the phases of energy supply, transformation, demand and consumption, as well as trends and behavior of energy indicators over a period of ten years.

Minister of Energy and Mining Fernando Santos, who attended the presentation of the report in Quito, pointed out that the purpose of creating the BEN is to provide the public and private sector with energy information that is useful for analysis and decision-making, which enables the adoption of government policies and determination of future actions.

The balance sheet is a tool that is part of the National Statistical System (SEN) that is coordinated annually with the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) and mainly enables solving information needs for national energy planning; as required by international organizations.
Meanwhile, other results included in the report were:
After reviewing the figures, Minister Santos emphasized the importance of having these statistical tools. “The national government is committed to the implementation of policies aimed at the energy transition. We must preserve the environment through concrete measures such as reducing the use of fossil fuels,” said the official.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Electricity, Marcelo Jaramillo, pointed out that BEN should be an ally of the country’s production apparatus, noting that it is becoming an important tool for academic research and scientific interpretation in the field of energy.
The factor measures CO2 emissions
A report on the country’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emission factor for 2022 was also issued, which was carried out using the “Electrical System CO2 Emission Factor Calculation Tool”, version v7.0 ., provided for this purpose by the United Nations Purpose.
This report was issued by the Technical Commission that Determines Greenhouse Gas Emission Factors (CTFE) in Ecuador, composed of the Ministries of Energy and Mining, Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (Maate), the National Electricity Operator (Cenace) and the Energy Regulation and Control Agency and non-renewable natural resources (ARCERNNR).
The interest in solar energy is doubling, the investment can go from 1,000 to 40,000 dollars for housing, and in companies it exceeds a million dollars.
The results of the 2022 report enable the quantification of emission reductions from renewable energy projects and those related to energy efficiency; In addition, tools are presented to monitor the carbon footprint of companies and users who need to evaluate corporate inventories.
The CEO of Cenace, Gabriel Argüello, pointed out that the emission factor is a key tool in the fight against climate change, since it allows measuring the amount of CO2 emissions associated with the production of electricity in the electricity grid, in addition to evaluating the effectiveness of mitigation policies implemented by the state. , but also companies, and enables decision-making aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
