The new Peruvian port of Chancay, which is being built by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping, has awakened the interest of neighboring economies such as Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador, as indicated on Tuesday, August 22, a company spokesperson.
During a visit to the works in the port of Chancay for accredited correspondents in Peru, the manager of Corporate Affairs of Cosco Shipping, Mario de las Casas, explained that the company offered a presentation of its project to a delegation of Brazilian companies that recently arrived in Peru.
De las Casas stressed that, with the port of Chancay, “in 28 days, Brazil could be in Asia,” compared to the 45 days it takes to make that journey today. In addition, he recalled that “Cosco not only has a port in Chancay, but also in Seattle and Long Beach (United States)” on the Pacific coast, as well as in Greece, Dubai and Europe.
“It is a very large company, which is going to have an impact and break the ‘status quo,'” added the executive in statements to correspondents from the Foreign Press Association in Peru (APEP). Cosco also has a shipping line of 1,300 ships around the world, he added.
The connection between Brazil and Peru is possible at its Amazon border by a road that leads from Acre to the city of Pucallpa, one of the main cities in the central Peruvian jungle. In the same way as Brazil, other neighboring countries of Peru such as “Chile, Colombia and Ecuador are interested in being able to reduce their deadlines and export times”, De las Casas said.
When will it start operations?
The port of Chancay has received an initial investment of US$1.3 billion to put into operation four berths that allow the landing of ships of 18,000 containers, which was not possible in any South American port to date. The start of operations is expected to be close to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. in November of next year, under the pro tempore presidency of Peru.
