Civil construction workers demand improvement of working conditions and salary increase

Civil construction workers in Peru, represented by the Federation of Civil Construction Workers of Peru (FTCCP), are demanding a real salary increase in the face of the purchasing loss due to inflationwhich reached 5.88% annual for July.

This lawsuit is being treated as the central issue in the current collective bargaining by branch of activity in the construction sector between the FTCCP and the Peruvian Chamber of Construction (I capeco).

“The increase is very important, especially in a temporary labor sector, where on average a worker works with labor rights four months a year. It is necessary to recover the purchasing power of the salary”, affirmed Luis Villanueva, general secretary of the FTCCP.

In addition to the salary increase, the construction workers are also requesting the recognition of time lost due to transportation when the work is located outside the jurisdiction of the worker’s place of residence, the increase in the bonus for mobility; as well as raising the subsidies for those who cover the night shift, highly specialized jobs and risk of work below ground level, buildings at a level below the second basement or more.

Villanueva stressed that the investment of construction employees increases due to the rise in the cost of transportation, food and medical care due to the effects of construction activity on the health of workers.

“Those who build hospitals, schools, commercial centers, houses, the important roads that connect our cities and mobilize the national economy, among other large infrastructures, it is fair that the recognition of their work is based on a decent salary increase,” he added.
