‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’: Lessons from Teenage Summer to Taylor Swift’s Rhythm

How can a season of beach and sun turn into a series of dramatic events? Maybe you just need to be a teenager for life around you, especially to start changing without warning.

Or at least that’s what happens to the young protagonist Belly (Lola Tung)who has been enjoying the summer months in the house of her mother’s best friend for years, Susanna (Rachel Blanchard) with his two children Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). But in the summer that the series The summer I became beautiful (Prime Video) receives its viewers in the first season, Belly’s reality begins to distort.

Not only does she look different – older, more flirtatious – but a negative shadow seems to be cast over Conrad, whom Belly had already secretly noticed as more than just a friend.

But what happens to a friendship when it crosses the line of love? It’s just one of the lessons Belly and the other teens will have to learn as part of the long journey of growing up.

The second season of the series was successfully released weeks ago and all episodes are now available on Prime Video (the latest episode arrives today). In the new chapters an unexpected visitor threatens the future of Susannah’s beloved home and Belly will have to gather her friends to take action and decide once and for all where her heart is.

From book to stream

The most watched teen drama on Prime Video today is the fruit of the imagination of the author Jenny Hanwho originally published his novel in 2009 followed by It’s not summer without you (2010) And We will always have summer (2011)making his story a literary trilogy.

In previous years, Han had also enjoyed streaming success with Netflix-produced movies To all the boys I loved before (2018) and are among the most reproduced on that platform.

“I am often asked how to write as an adult from an adolescent perspective. Sometimes they ask me why. Why write about teenagers? Not really a question worth answering, but I thought I’d give it a try, if only because it made me a reason to reaffirm the things I love about childhood, about writing young adult fiction, about the terrifyingly bittersweet experience of being a teenager.reflected the 42-year-old author in an essay for net-a-porter.

“As an adult, you kind of get used to change. You know nothing will last forever. But the feelings of teenagers are true, loud and honest (…) It can be so hard to be young, but it can also be so sweet. It is my cherished hope that hardness and sweetness and electricity and pain appear in my books, just as they do in life.”

Thanks to the success, although Han continues her work as an author —one of the bestsellers according to the New York Times— Today, she also owns her own production company Jenny Kissed me, focused on telling stories of adolescents, of all ages.

She is also the executive producer of XO, Kitty (Netflix) a spinoff of the universe To all boys.
