According to the latest national employment report from INEI, the average monthly income received by workers in rural areas (S/854.6) is approximately 50% of the salaries received in urban areas (S/ 1711). (See graph)
The situation is aggravated when considering that, during the first quarter of 2023, it was reported that 140,100 (-4.1%) people of the 26 regions of the country lost their jobs compared to the same time period in 2022.
In the capital, the decrease was 0.7% (93,100 citizens). In addition, the pay gaps of gender remain high. The average remuneration per month of women —both in urban and rural areas— amounts to S/1,297, which represents about S/500 less than what their male counterparts earn (S/1,765).
Income by sectors
The average total monthly income is S/1,566. In this sense, the services sector is the one that obtains the highest income with S/1,885; It is followed by construction with S/1,877, manufacturing (S/1,596), commerce (S/1,371) and primary activities such as agriculturefishing and mining, which obtain the lowest amounts, of S/939.

rising precariousness
Approximately 8 million 494,600 citizens (46.8%) are in a situation of underemployment for the periods between April 2022 and March 2023, which represents almost half of the economically active population occupied Peru. The other 48.6% (8 million 825,300 people) have adequate employment.
This trend is in line with the evolution of the GDP in the first quarter of the year, which in March had a fall of 0.43%, while in the first semester it fell 0.45%.
Likewise, the unemployment rate in the country, in the period of time analyzed, stood at 5.9%. In detail, in regions the rate was 1.5%, while in the urban area showed its highest figure: it reached 6.9%.
It should be noted that, in this measurement, female unemployment (7.1%) was higher than male (4.8%).
Informality reaches 95% in rural areas
The employment report INEI It also indicates that 95.1% of the employed population in rural areas is in an informal situation. In the case of the urban area, it is around 68%, which is equivalent to 27% less than in regions.
At the national level, informality is 73.5%. Likewise, 76% of employed women have informal employment, a figure higher than that of men, which is 71.4%.
