China: Ministry of Commerce criticizes the US position in the WTO

The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China issued a report accusing the United States of failing to comply with the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), affecting, it says, industrial chains and the flow of supplies.

Dated last August 11, the report entitled General assessment of US compliance with its WTO obligationscriticizes Washington for applying since 2017 a policy of “America First.”

The document argues that this measure “undermines the multilateral trading system, implements unilateralism, executes a double standard in industrial policies and disrupts global industrial and supply chains” of inputs.

Specifically, in the text US is accused of persistently blocking appointments of WTO Appellate Body memberswhich has led, he says, to the paralysis of said body, which mediates in commercial conflicts between countries.

In addition, it points out that the US “has arbitrarily increased tariffs on imports, abused trade remedies and export control measures, granted discriminatory subsidies, instigated the disengagement and fragmentation of industrial chains and supply, and imposed economic coercion and sanctions of all kinds”.

According to the report, these actions harm the interests of all WTO members, “violating the United States’ international obligation to comply with the rules” of that organization, which has “seriously challenged the multilateral trading system.”

For his part, China assures that it will continue to work closely with all WTO members, firmly upholding the multilateral trading system, engaging fully and deeply in the reform of the WTO and collectively advancing the multilateral trading system to play a greater role in global economic governance.
