MEF announces new social program: what is it about?
According to the declarations of the Minister of Economy, Alex Contreras, within the budget of the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) corresponding to the year 2024, special interventions are being incorporated to avoid the increase in poverty. In this sense, the current social programs will be expanded and a new one will be created: Juntos Urbano.
“To try to mitigate the increase in poverty, we are giving it a historic budget, not only to expand current social programs, but to create a new program that is Juntos Urbano. It is still a preliminary version, but in times of low growth, social policies are more important,” he explained in an interview with La República.
New Juntos Urbano program: who would benefit?
The Juntos Urbano program, which would begin to be implemented in 2024, would be aimed at the poor and most vulnerable segments of the urban areas of Lima and other cities in the country.
It is worth mentioning that, according to the report of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, monetary poverty in Peru increased by 1.6% in 2022, compared to the previous year, and reached 27.5%, which is equivalent to 9, 18 million people.
MIDIS confirms expansion of the Juntos program in urban areas
During an interview with RPP News, the Minister of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), Julio Demartini, confirmed the expansion of the Juntos program, whose purpose will be to fight poverty and extreme poverty in the country’s urban areas.
In this sense, he explained that Juntos Urbano will provide financial transfers to families in vulnerable situations so that they can eat better and buy supplements when women are pregnant.
“With the MEF, we are launching Juntos Urbano, which is nothing more than (…), in the urban area, going to pregnant mothers and following up with a transfer to early childhood, which is called TPI. This is S/ An additional 50 to the Juntos family so that these people can eat better, buy good supplements when pregnant,” he explained.
Finally, the head of MIDIS said that said social program will have financing of S/300 million to achieve registration in urban and peri-urban areas of the country.
