Peru has more than 460,000 hectares dedicated to organic production

The National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa) indicates that Peru currently has more than 464,546 hectares dedicated to organic production and more than 95,157 hectares in the transition process, certified by authorized bodies. This, within the framework of the Promotion Day of the AOrganic griculture and the non-use of agrochemicals.

It is estimated that There are more than 107,367 producers who are dedicated to this area; of which 94% are small farmers who are associated with group operators and comply with national organic standards and demanding international markets.

Among the main organic crops are coffee with 124,132 hectares, chestnut with 210,609 ha, cocoa with 52,191 ha, quinoa with 10,625 and banana with 7,419; in line with this, the European Union, USA and Asia are the main destination markets for these products.

The emerging crops that are added to the development of agro-exports are blueberries, kion, avocado, mango, grape and pomegranate, which are having a good acceptance by consumers internationally.

To keep these crops as ‘organic’, Senasa carries out a timely inspection of operators with certified fields and continues to work in a coordinated manner with 982 certified operators in order to promote the growth of organic production and its global competitiveness.

As part of the actions contemplated in the second agrarian reform, focused on food safety, Senasa has been working with more than 23,000 producers from all regions of the country, through Field Schools – ECAs, for the adoption of good agricultural practices with emphasis on the use of biological control (medium natural for the control of agricultural pests) as an alternative to chemical control; The objective is to avoid residues of contaminants in fresh foods that put human, animal and environmental health at risk.
