Last Friday, July 21, the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in alliance with ProInvestment presented the portfolio of investment projects of Works for Taxes to the business sector. More than 50 people, including decision makers and representatives of public institutions, attended the activity. The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Daniel Maurate Romero, highlighted the urgency of addressing the serious problem of overcrowding in the prison system, which exceeds 50,000 inmates. He stressed the importance of expediting the execution of projects to build penitentiary establishments and thus meet the growing demand.
For his part, the executive director of Proinversión, José Salardi, expressed his support for the initiative and expressed the possibility of turning these projects into a reality through joint work with the MINJUSDH.
The president of INPE, Javier LLaque Moya, presented the portfolio of projects for thel Improving prison infrastructure and security, including the construction of important prisons such as EP Shumba in Cajamarca (S/406 million), EP Venadopampa in Huánuco (S/310 million), EP Ancón III in Lima (S/581 million), EP Abancay (S/82 million) and the Arequipa Penitentiary Complex (S/228 million). The total investment for these projects exceeds S/1,607 million.
The INPE representative also explained that, to serve the inmates of these future establishments, it is necessary to have a new center for criminological and penitentiary studies (CENECP), whose investment amounts to S/127 million.
The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights also presented a prioritized list of investment projects valued at approximately S/193 million, aimed at promoting investments through Works for Taxes in various parts of the country, which benefit more than 3 million Peruvians in 6 regions.
