The oil infrastructure belonged to the company Savia Perú and had been abandoned since 2022. The reports from OEFA and Osinergmin are contradictory, since one of them indicates that it was a controlled landslide, while the other argues that it was a collapse. What really happened?

Various reports on social networks showed the precise moment in which an oil platform from the Savia company succumbed in the waters of the El Alto sea, Talara province, in the Piura region. The video was captured last July 17 around 2 pm
This fact motivated the alert of the citizens due to the concern of a new ecological disaster. Internet users immediately began looking for answers about what was recorded in images on the OO platform from batch Z-2B.
Shortly after, the Savia company was in charge of issuing a pronouncement and assured that everything was “scheduled uninstall jobs and permanent removal” as a measure to prevent the complication of carrying out maintenance work due to oceanographic conditions.
This version was supported by the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (osinergmin). “Osinergmin has verified that there was no hydrocarbon spill,” the entity reported regarding the structure that has been inoperative since 2022.
For its part, the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA), on July 18, ensured the start of a special supervision “in view of the emergency caused by the collapse of the OO platform” in Peña Negra.
A year ago, in April 2022, an event with similar conditions occurred on the VV platform, for which reason Savia presented an abandonment plan, which did not include the OO platform. OEFA’s actions will make it possible to determine compliance with environmental obligations.
