Minister of Production: Next week it will be known if a short fishing season opens

The head of the Ministry of Production (Produce), Raúl Pérez Reyes Espejo, reported that three weeks ago in the monitoring carried out by the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe) it was determined that there was a level of cooling off Chicama and the coast of Lima, “enough to think that there could be anchovy activity in the area”. For this reason, a third cruise was sent, the result of which will be known in a week and will give perspective on whether or not a short anchovy fishing season can be opened at an industrial level.

“At this time when Imarpe is doing this work, the idea is to have results next week to see what is happening, whether or not this level of water cooling is reflected in greater availability of resources. So, we have to see what comes out of the Imarpe studies and, Based on that, determine if it is appropriate for us to open a small first season or not. We hope to evaluate whether we open the second season or not,” the minister explained to The Republic.

On June 8, Produce announced that the first fishing season—which usually takes place between April and July of each year—would not open because the warming of the sea had caused the anchovy to move to the depths, which made its capture impossible, in addition, a high incidence of juveniles was alerted.

Regarding pressure from the industry to start a fishing season, Minister Pérez Reyes reaffirmed that the decision will always be based on the evaluations of Imarpe, which is the technical body in charge of carrying out these studies.

“Obviously, the actors (in the industry) are interested, each one has particular interests, I understand there is associated employment generation and what we do it is simply looking at what Imarpe tells us, in relation to sea conditions and the availability of fishing resources. The two previous times he told us that the conditions did not exist to open the season and that was what was done. We will wait for this third report and based on this we will make some decisions,” the minister pointed out.
